5 Phrases Great Coaches Use Without Thinking
The best coaching moments often come down to what you say in the right ten seconds. Not a technique or a drill. A phrase that landed exactly when it needed to. If some of these are already in your vocabulary, you're already doing something most coaches never get to.
1. "What do you notice?"
This question hands the student their own progress. Most coaches skip it entirely. Asking what a student notices after a rep shifts them from passive recipient to active observer. It builds self-awareness that outlasts anything you could point out for them, and that self-awareness is what keeps improving between sessions.
2. "That's the right instinct"
Validating a student's intuition before building on it changes how they receive what follows. When students feel like their own thinking is being honored, they become more invested in the correction. This phrase is a bridge. It says "you're already on the right track" before showing them the next step.
3. "Last time you couldn't do that"
Progress is invisible until someone names it. This phrase makes it real. Students often can't feel their own improvement. Pointing to a specific earlier moment and connecting it to now creates a sense of momentum that makes the next hard thing feel possible. That's why students come back, because the progress feels documented and real.
4. "What do you want to work on?"
Asking this gives students ownership of the session. Ownership drives engagement. A student who helped shape what you're working on is more invested in it than one who's just along for the ride. It also tells you things about where they are that you might not have thought to ask. One question, a lot of information.
5. "One more time"
Said the right way, this is one of the most powerful phrases in coaching. Not as pressure. As an invitation. "One more time" after a near-miss tells the student you saw what was close, you believe they can get it and you're not done investing in them yet. Students feel the difference between being pushed and being believed in.
